Steviol glycosides have been approved as a food additive since December 2, 2011.
The EU Commission has adopted a regulation which approves the use of sweeteners made with steviol glycosides, produced using Stevia leaves, for use in foodstuffs. Stevia extract, Stevia fluid and Stevia tabs can then be sold as table sweeteners and can thus also be placed on normal shelves next to the food supplies in food stores.
Stevia leaves in dried or ground form have been exempted from approval up until now. It is still legally unclear if Stevia leaves can be categorized as a novelty food or not. Raab Vitalfood will continue to offer Stevia leaves as an ingredient with which to make mouth washes. The approved steviol glycosides may not be used in organic foods even if the Stevia leaves have been organically grown. At the moment steviol glycosides have not been approved as a food additive in Appendix VIII of the EU Ecological Regulations.
